Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge particular decisions made by the official, following the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
