The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This
Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
