European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
